Please note, this guide is for unmanaged Mac OS X computers where you have local administrative rights. If you are using a managed Mac OS X computer please see OS X Printing, if you are using an unmanaged Mac computer and don't have administrative rights please see Web Printing

Only two printers/print queues are installed on BSG Orchard Macs: BSG Follow Me Colour and BSG Follow Me Mono.

Start by downloading the Ricoh 5503 printer driver from http://support.ricoh.com/bb/html/dr_ut_e/re/model/mpc4503/mpc4503en.htm. Mount the downloaded disk image and install the Ricoh printer driver package.

Open System Preferences and select Printers & Scanners.

Click the lock icon and enter your username and password (for a user with local admin privileges).

Select the + under the Printers list, a new dialogue window will appear.

Right Click on the toolbar and select Customise Toolbar... Drag the Advanced icon to toolbar.

Click the Advanced icon, set Type to Windows printer via spoolss

Add the BSG Follow Me Mono URL:

* smb://bsg-prt01.bsg.ox.ac.uk/Follow-Me-Mono

Add the Name: BSG - Follow Me Colour

Click Use and Select Software... and select Ricoh MP C4503 PS from the list.

Click OK

Then repeat the process to add the BSG Follow Me Colour Queue:

• smb://bsg-prt01.bsg.ox.ac.uk/Follow-Me-Colour

Then, for each new print queue.

Changes to the standard defaults for the queues are set in CUPS:

• Options Installed:

  • Option Tray: Lower Paper Trays
  • Finisher SR3150

• General:

  • Fit to Paper: Nearest Size and Scale - this means A3 jobs released to an A4-only printer will come out shrunk to fit on A4 paper.
  • Duplex: Long Edge
  • Color Mode: Color / Black and white (as per name)

Tray selection defaults to 'Auto Select' though this does not appear in the CUPS GUI. Print jobs should be left to auto-select the correct tray unless a specific tray is required e.g. bypass tray.

How to print in Mac OS X

1. Open the Print window in the normal way for your application, eg. open the File menu and click Print.

   

2. Click the drop-down next to 'Printer:' to open the printer list.

   

3. In the list of printers you will see a number of Follow Me printers. There are two Follow Me printers to allow you to quickly select whether you want to print in colour or black and white (mono). The default is the Mono printer. Select your desired Follow Me printer.

   

4. Set the number of copies and which pages you want to print.

   

5. If you wish to specify additional printing options (such as multiple copies, printing one-sided, watermarking, stapling, booklet printing etc.), click Copies & Pages and select another page of settings from the menu.

   • To print single-sided, select 'Layout' then set Two-Sided 'Off'.
   • To print from the Bypass Tray, select 'Paper Feed' then set All Pages From 'Bypass Tray'.
   • To staple or punch, select 'Printer Features', Feature Set 'General 3'
   • To add a watermark, select 'Printer Features', Feature Set 'General 4/5'

   

6. Click Print to send the print job to the Follow Me printer.

   

7. Move to the printer you want to print from, then swipe your University card on the reader.

8. You will see your list of print jobs. Tap an individual job to show information on that job and options to print or delete it. Alternatively tap 'Print all' to release all jobs.

9. Tap exit to log off from your job list.
